Dynamic Geometry – Classical Esthetics updated using The Axis Syllabus 1-3 Apr 2020 (postponed) _________________________
Wednesday, February 5th, 2020The Conservatoire de la Ville de Luxembourg and Dance Science Net are happy to announce the next professional development training in Kinésiologie posturale: The Axis Syllabus taught by Frey Faust (in EN, FR, DE)
The Axis Syllabus
The Axis Syllabus (AS) is an open-source resource toolbox, a constantly evolving reference system, or lexicon for the organization and cross-correlation of empirical and scientific findings from the study of human movement. This includes anatomical details, physics, practical applications, research, analysis and transmission. The AS was founded by Frey Faust in the late 90’s.
“Syllabus” is Latin for list or table of content, while “Axis” refers to the points and through-lines that provide a referential grid for sensing volume and tracking movements through the kinesphere. It is our experience that the awareness of volume, direction and mass facilitate a more accurate perception of physio-dynamics, furnishing the basis of more appropriate reflexes and responses to the mover. Content
The human body plan is a chaotic interweaving of twisting curves and oblique intersections, where there are no clear lines or right angles to be found.
Although geometrical simplicity is a prized value for performance, it follows that attempts to force the body to conform to monoplanes and single rotational axes presents the risk of injury. But the good news is, a basic study of anatomy and physics provides cues and clues for maintaining joint integrity when creating resonant geometrical shapes and pathways. Using the Axis Syllabus as a guide to joint centration and coherency, this session will provide a methodological approach to simultaneous geometrical clarity and health conservation.
The masterclass is open to dance, music, and drama teachers, singers, instrumentalists, performers, advanced students, and anyone interested in optimising static and dynamic alignment while researching their desired Esthetics in the performing arts. This workshop is recognised and validated by the Commissariat à l’Enseignement Musical as a Professional Development Training for the teachers of the conservatoires and UGDA schools.
Frey Faust
Born in 1960, Frey Faust began performing at the age of 8 with his family as a traveling troubadour. He is a second generation contact improviser and an alumnus of the 80´s New York dance scene. Some of his more important early influences came from: Shekhinah Mountainwater, Nita Little, Pavel Rouba, Rene Bazinet, and Janet Panetta. He has worked with and for a number of artists (order of appearance): Ohad Naharin, Donald Byrd, David Parsons, Gina Buntz, Howard Katz, Merce Cunningham, Meredith Monk, Randy Warshaw, Bob Een, Stephen Petronio, Danny Ezralow… to name a few. He founded or co-founded three dance companies, and has created or co-created over 40 choreographic solo and group works. Following an independent study of anatomy, biomechanics, and physics, he has been able to build a pedagogical approach that has made him a sought after teacher, personal coach and technical counselor. After fifteen years of research, he consolidated his findings in a book, ‘The Axis Syllabus – human movement lexicon’, which he continues to edit with the help of the Axis Syllabus International Research Network. Founded in 2009, the ASIRN is a rapidly expanding group of experts from many related fields in the human movement and education sciences. Recently, his work on the AS has been focused into the construction of a symbol set with the potential to streamline movement documentation and analysis. He also makes shoes, speaks 4 languages, continues to create and perform dances.
